SEM2: 11:00AM- 11:45AM Industrial Communications By John Piccinic This presentation explores the evolution and application of analog signaling and digital communications in industrial settings, offering a comprehensive understanding of both traditional and modern communication protocols. Beginning with the fundamentals of analog signaling, it progresses to digital communication protocols such as HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) and Fieldbus, illustrating their role in industrial automation and control. The discussion then transitions to the basics of Ethernet as a networking technology, emphasizing its adaptability and scalability. Finally, the presentation delves into the intricacies of industrial Ethernet, highlighting its benefits for robust, high-speed, and reliable communication in demanding environments. Throughout, real-world examples and live demonstrations using test equipment will be presented, showcasing waveforms that visualize different signaling types and communication methods. These demonstrations will provide attendees with a clear, practical understanding of the technology, enabling them to apply this knowledge effectively in their own operations. This session aims to equip professionals with the knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of modern industrial communication systems, bridging the gap between legacy technologies and emerging digital standards. John PiccinicA recognized speaker, John has delivered keynotes at PMMI and presented at ISA and ISA PDH events. Beyond his professional achievements, John is an active amateur radio enthusiast and skilled in welding and metal fabrication. Recently, he also performed at a veterans banquet, reflecting his commitment to community and service.
SEM3: 12:00 – 12:45PM What’s New and Next in Process control By Jessica Bookwalter The session will provide an overview of the latest developments in process control, using examples from Rockwell Automation’s process portfolio to explain the concepts, including next-generation designs to support extended temperatures, corrosive gas protection for control system components, high available & redundancy, and more. A live demonstration of our PlantPAx Distributed Control System (DCS) will be conducted by remotely accessing an active process training unit Jessica Bookwalterhas been a domain expert at Rockwell Automation since 2019, helping customers with automation applications across Ohio (primarily) and beyond. She specializes in software and control products related to process control and software at levels 2 and 3 in the Purdue Model. She has 20 years of experience in food and beverage manufacturing, including instrumentation, batch & sequencing, drying, roasting and CIP applications
